The New Method for Learning
to Read Written Jazz Music
by Jacques Rizzo
Throughout the country, most music educators teach jazz by
rote, because in jazz, "what you see" isn't "what
you get". Students who wish to study this musical form generally
have had traditional, classical-oriented training, and most have
difficulty reading jazz music. This self-study text is the answer
to this problem.
Published in five compatible books, READING JAZZ is supplied
with an accompanying CD. The most common jazz rhythms are presented
one at a time in order of increasing complexity in a series of
short exercises and duets. The CD is used as an example of the
proper performance techniques needed, and for jazz reading practice
with a professional rhythm section. These books can be used independent
of the teacher, so this play-along, self-study approach is the
logical solution to one of the biggest problems in jazz - how
to interpret the written page.
